Trucking Drives the Economy

Employment

New Mexico's trucking industry provided 31,320 jobs or one out of 20 in the state in 2011. New Mexico's total trucking industry wages paid in 2011 exceeded $1.4 billion, with an average annual trucking industry salary of $43,178. In May 2011, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the United States reported that truck drivers, heavy, tractor-trailer and light delivery drivers, held 13,210 jobs with a mean annual salary of $35,365.

Small Business Emphasis

In 2012, New Mexico had over 3,120 trucking small and locally owned companies served by a wide range of large and small supporting businesses.

Transportation of Essential Products

In 2010, trucks transported 91% of the state's total manufactured tonnage or 134,076 tons per day. Over 89% of New Mexico communities move their goods using trucks.


Trucking Pays the Freight

As an Industry

In 2009, New Mexico's trucking industry paid approximately $417 million in federal and state roadway taxes. The industry paid 54% of all taxes owed by New Mexico motorists, despite trucks representing only 20% of the state's vehicle miles traveled.

Individual Companies

As of January 2013, a typical five-axle tractor-semitrailer combination paid $8,085 in state highway use taxes in addition to $8,906 in federal use taxes. These taxes were over and above the standard taxes paid by New Mexico businesses.

Roadway Use

In New Mexico's 68,384 miles of public roads over which all motorists traveled 26 billion miles, and truckers traveled 5.4 billion miles in 2008.

HVUT is the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax paid to the IRS annually for operating heavy vehicles on public highways at registered gross weights equal to 55,000 pounds or more.
